Behold: December 21

This week’s readings are based on the “Behold” sermon series. For this series, we are looking at what it truly means to BEHOLD, gaze at, grasp, relish, internalize, and rejoice in Jesus Christ. Start beholding right now by giving thanks for this time with God. Then start reading the text and letting it read you.

And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

Luke 2:33-35 (ESV)

Simeon saw a young poor couple carrying a week old baby. Immediately the Holy Spirit confirmed to him this was the Savior. What is so interesting about Simeon is that he did not say, “But God, how can this be Your Messiah? I expected somebody mighty, wealthy, and kingly.” Instead, he accepted the revelation that God gave him. He took God at His Word. No wonder he is described as righteous, devout, and dependent. The question is would we have responded the same? Jesus is not always who we expect Him to be, but He is always what we need. Simeon knew this truth, and his life was changed. Are you seeing Jesus for who He really is or who you want Him to be? Where do you need Jesus this Christmas season? Prayerfully ponder these questions.
